Cochrane Controlled Trials Register
  • Bibliography of controlled trials identified by contributors to the Cochrane Collaboration.  Combines hand searching of the international literature with online searching

  • Creates a source of data for systematic reviews; includes studies published via:

    • MEDLINE

    • EMBASE

    • Conference proceedings

Cochrane Controlled Trials Register Search Strengths:

  • Can restrict your retrieval to the following subgroups of articles

    • Cochrane Groups include:

      • Breast Cancer

      • Stroke

      • Neonatal Disease

    • Embase Records

    • Medline Records

  • Comprehensive search done for each topic review

  • Can restrict results to type of publication including but not limited to:

    • Case report

    • Clinical trial

    • Multicenter Study

  • Search interface mirrors the Ovid Medline though there is no “mapping” as available in Medline for your keyword choices to help pick up variations in terminology

Cochrane Controlled Trials Register Search Cautions:

  • Systematic reviews may contain Odds Ratios and other tables from meta-analysis

    • Graphs are displayed separately on the screen

      • Select“outline”

      • Select “graphs and tables”

  • Fewer limiting options to refine results

  • No easy method to find diagnostic vs. therapeutic articles

  • Overlap between Cochrane and MEDLINE

    • Must filter to retrieve additional articles not already indexed in MEDLINE
