PubMed’s Clinical Queries located on the left toolbar under PubMed services has several specialized searching filters for clinicians—Divided into three groups Clinical Study Category, Systematic Reviews and Medical Genetics.

PubMed Clinical Queries

Clinical Study Category Strengths

  • Radio button selection to locate the relevant literature on etiology, prognosis, diagnosis and therapy of diseases and diagnostics.

  • Search results are based on RB Haynes developed filters which optimize search result based on sensitivity and specificity of the research.

    • Measures for assessing the results of diagnostic and screening tests. Sensitivity (recall) represents the proportion of truly diseased persons in a screened population who are identified as being diseased by the test. It is a measure of the probability of correctly diagnosing a condition. Specificity (precision) is the proportion of truly non-diseased persons who are so identified by the screening test. It is a measure of the probability of correctly identifying a non-diseased person. (From Last, Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed)

Clinical Study Category Cautions

  • Must clearly understand the difference between the sensitivity and specificity options to benefit from the search results

  • Not intended to supply a comprehensive literature search.  Clinical Study provides information on those few "good" articles which will help you make informed decisions.
