Create a Reference Manually
  1. Open an EndNote Library (*.enl).
  2. References > New (New Reference window opens).
  3. Select Reference Type (journal article, book, book chapter, dissertation, etc.).
  4. Enter or edit data in highlighted [boxed] fields (Fig. 3).
  5. Close Reference window to save data to the EndNote Library.

Figure 3 is an example of transcribing a journal article reference into the EndNote Library “placebos”:

Moerman DE, Jonas WB. Deconstructing the placebo effect and finding the meaning response. Annals of Internal Medicine. 136(6):471-6, 2002 Mar 19.

Fig. 3 – creating a reference and entering data in Pages field.

Use the pull-down menu at Reference Type to select the appropriate template.

Each Reference has fields for specific information: author, title, year (of publication), volume, abstract, etc.

Enter as much information as possible into the fields. Highlighting a field will display a box surrounding that field; add or edit data to that field as necessary.

Press TAB to highlight the next field; press SHIFT+TAB to highlight the previous field.

Each reference has a 64,000-character limit, with a 32,000-character limit for one field.

TIP: press Enter after entry of each author name in Author field.
